Arnold Hills

Arnold Hills (1857–1927) was an English businessman, sportsman, and philanthropist. He is best known for his role in the founding of West Ham United F.C. and his contributions to the vegetarian movement in the United Kingdom.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Arnold Hills was born in Denmark Hill, London, in 1857. He was educated at Harrow School and later attended University College, Oxford, where he excelled in sports, particularly rowing and athletics.
Business Career[edit | edit source]
Hills joined the family business, the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, which was one of the largest shipbuilding companies in the United Kingdom during the late 19th century. Under his leadership, the company expanded its operations and became a significant player in the shipbuilding industry.
Sports Involvement[edit | edit source]
Hills was a keen sportsman and played a pivotal role in the development of football in East London. In 1895, he founded the Thames Ironworks F.C., which later became West Ham United F.C.. His vision was to create a football club that would provide recreational opportunities for the workers of the Thames Ironworks.
Vegetarianism and Philanthropy[edit | edit source]
A committed vegetarian, Hills was a prominent advocate for the vegetarian movement in the UK.
