Artery spasm

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Artery Spasm

An artery spasm or vascular spasm is a sudden, temporary narrowing of the arteries. This condition can occur in any artery in the body, including the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Artery spasms are often caused by stress, smoking, and exposure to cold temperatures. Certain medications, such as those used to treat migraines, can also cause artery spasms. In some cases, the cause of the spasm is unknown.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The symptoms of an artery spasm depend on the location of the affected artery. For example, a spasm in the coronary arteries can cause chest pain, while a spasm in the arteries supplying blood to the brain can cause headaches or strokes.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of artery spasms often involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. Additional tests, such as an electrocardiogram or a coronary angiogram, may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for artery spasms typically involves lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and reducing stress. Medications, such as calcium channel blockers and nitrates, may also be prescribed to help prevent spasms.
