Arthur Samberg
Arthur J. Samberg (February 6, 1941 – July 14, 2020) was an American hedge fund manager and philanthropist. He was the founder of Pequot Capital Management, a prominent hedge fund that was one of the largest in the world at its peak.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Arthur Samberg was born on February 6, 1941, in The Bronx, New York City. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics. He later received an MBA from the Columbia Business School.
Career[edit | edit source]
Samberg began his career in the aerospace industry, working for Lockheed Martin and NASA. However, he soon transitioned to finance, joining Weiss, Peck & Greer in the 1970s. In 1986, he founded Pequot Capital Management, which became one of the most successful hedge funds of its time.
Pequot Capital Management[edit | edit source]
Pequot Capital Management was known for its aggressive investment strategies and high returns. At its peak, the fund managed over $15 billion in assets. However, the firm faced scrutiny from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over allegations of insider trading. In 2009, Samberg decided to close Pequot Capital Management amid the ongoing investigation.

Arthur Samberg was a noted philanthropist, contributing to various educational and medical institutions. He was a significant donor to his alma mater, MIT, and also supported the Columbia Business School. Additionally, he made substantial contributions to healthcare organizations and research initiatives.

Samberg was married to Rebecca Samberg, and they had three children. He passed away on July 14, 2020, at the age of 79.
