- Ashland was platted in 1870 when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad was extended to that point. The city was named after Ashland, the estate of Henry Clay in Lexington, Kentucky.

- Ashland is located at 41°2′27″N 96°22′22″W (41.040867, -96.372734). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.04 square miles (2.69 km2), all land.
