Associated-Rediffusion

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Associated-Rediffusion was a British broadcasting company, active from 1955 to 1964. It was the first Independent Television (ITV) service provider for London, serving the area on weekdays. The company was a joint venture between British Electric Traction (BET), owning 49%, and Associated Newspapers, owner of the remaining 51%.

History[edit | edit source]

Associated Newspapers, a national newspaper publisher founded in 1905, and British Electric Traction, a transport and electricity company, formed Associated-Rediffusion in 1954. The company was awarded the first ITV franchise by the Independent Television Authority (ITA) in 1954, and began broadcasting on 22 September 1955.

Associated-Rediffusion was known for its high production values and commitment to quality programming. It produced a wide range of programming, including news, drama, entertainment, and children's shows. Some of its most popular programs included The Adventures of Robin Hood, No Hiding Place, and Ready Steady Go!.

Demise and Legacy[edit | edit source]

In 1964, the ITA decided not to renew Associated-Rediffusion's franchise, instead awarding it to a new company, Thames Television. Associated-Rediffusion ceased broadcasting on 29 July 1968.

Despite its relatively short lifespan, Associated-Rediffusion left a lasting legacy in British television. Many of its programs have become classics, and its high production values set a standard for future ITV companies.
