Association of Optometrists
The Association of Optometrists (AOP) is a professional membership organisation for optometrists in the United Kingdom. It provides support, advice, and representation for its members, who are primarily optometrists, but also include dispensing opticians, optometry students, and optical assistants.
History[edit | edit source]
The AOP was established in 1946, originally as the Association of Optical Practitioners. It was formed to represent the interests of optometrists and to promote the profession within the healthcare sector. Over the years, the AOP has evolved to address the changing needs of its members and the optical profession.

The primary objectives of the AOP are to:
- Provide professional support and guidance to its members.
- Advocate for the interests of optometrists within the healthcare system.
- Promote high standards of practice and professional development.
- Ensure that the public has access to quality eye care services.

The AOP publishes "Optometry Today", a leading journal that provides news, research, and insights into the field of optometry. It also produces various guides and resources to support optometrists in their practice.
Advocacy[edit | edit source]
The AOP represents the interests of optometrists to the government, healthcare bodies, and other stakeholders. It works to influence policy and ensure that the role of optometrists is recognised and valued within the healthcare system.
