Association of Zoos and Aquariums
Association of Zoos and Aquariums[edit | edit source]
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation. Founded in 1924, the AZA provides accreditation to zoos and aquariums that meet rigorous standards of animal care, welfare, and management.
History[edit | edit source]
The AZA was originally established as the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums. Over the years, it has evolved to become a leading authority in the zoo and aquarium community, promoting the highest standards of animal care and welfare. The organization changed its name to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 1994 to better reflect its mission and scope.
Accreditation[edit | edit source]
AZA accreditation is a prestigious designation that signifies excellence in animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, and safety. The accreditation process involves a detailed application, a thorough on-site inspection by a team of experts, and a review by the AZA Accreditation Commission. Accredited institutions must undergo this process every five years to maintain their status.
Conservation Efforts[edit | edit source]
The AZA is committed to global wildlife conservation. It supports numerous Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs, which are cooperative breeding and management programs for threatened or endangered species. The AZA also facilitates the SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction program, which focuses on protecting species at risk of extinction.
Education and Research[edit | edit source]
Education is a core component of the AZA's mission. Member institutions provide educational programs that reach millions of visitors each year, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of wildlife. The AZA also supports scientific research that contributes to the knowledge and conservation of animal species.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Membership in the AZA is open to zoos, aquariums, and related facilities that meet the organization's standards. Members benefit from access to a network of professionals, resources for animal care and conservation, and opportunities for professional development.
