Asuman Baytop
Asuman Baytop (1920-2015) was a prominent Turkish pharmacist and botanist, known for her extensive research in the field of ethnobotany and pharmacognosy. She was a professor at the Istanbul University, where she made significant contributions to the study of medicinal plants in Turkey.

Asuman Baytop was born in 1920 in Istanbul, Turkey. She completed her primary and secondary education in Istanbul. She then pursued her higher education at the Faculty of Pharmacy at Istanbul University, where she graduated in 1943.
Career[edit | edit source]
After graduation, Baytop started her career as an assistant at the Department of Pharmacognosy at Istanbul University. She was promoted to associate professor in 1955 and to full professor in 1961. During her tenure, she conducted extensive research on the medicinal plants of Turkey and their uses in traditional medicine. Her work has been instrumental in the development of ethnobotany and pharmacognosy in Turkey.
Contributions to Ethnobotany and Pharmacognosy[edit | edit source]
Baytop's research focused on the identification, classification, and documentation of medicinal plants in Turkey. She also studied the traditional uses of these plants in Turkish folk medicine. Her work has resulted in the publication of several books and numerous scientific articles. One of her most notable works is "Therapy with Medicinal Plants in Turkey", which provides comprehensive information on the medicinal plants used in Turkish traditional medicine.

Asuman Baytop passed away in 2015, leaving behind a rich legacy in the field of ethnobotany and pharmacognosy. Her work continues to be a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in these fields. In recognition of her contributions, the Asuman Baytop Medicinal Plant Garden was established at Istanbul University.
