Athodyd is a type of jet engine that operates without any major moving parts. The term "athodyd" is an acronym for "aero-thermodynamic duct." This type of engine is also commonly known as a ramjet.

Principle of Operation[edit | edit source]

An athodyd works on the principle of ram compression. Air is compressed by the forward motion of the engine, mixed with fuel, and then ignited. The high-speed exhaust gases are expelled out of the rear, providing thrust. Unlike other jet engines, athodyds do not have compressors or turbines.

The concept of the athodyd dates back to the early 20th century. The first practical athodyd was developed during World War II and was used in the V-1 flying bomb by Nazi Germany. Post-war, the technology was further developed and tested in various experimental aircraft.

An athodyd consists of three main sections:

  • Intake: The air intake compresses the incoming air using the aircraft's forward speed.
  • Combustion Chamber: The compressed air is mixed with fuel and ignited.
  • Nozzle: The high-pressure exhaust gases are expelled through the nozzle, generating thrust.

Athodyds are primarily used in high-speed aircraft and missiles. They are most efficient at speeds above Mach 2 and are often used in supersonic and hypersonic flight.
