Atqasuk
Atqasuk is a city located in the North Slope Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is situated on the Meade River, approximately 60 miles southwest of Utqiaġvik.

The area around Atqasuk has been inhabited by the Iñupiat people for thousands of years. The name "Atqasuk" means "the place to dig the rock that burns" in the Iñupiat language, referring to the coal deposits found in the region. The modern settlement was established in the 20th century, primarily as a coal mining community.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Atqasuk is located at coordinates 70°28′N 157°24′W. The city covers a total area of 42.3 square miles, of which 39.0 square miles is land and 3.3 square miles is water. The Meade River flows through the city, providing a vital water source for the community.
Climate[edit | edit source]
Atqasuk has a tundra climate, characterized by long, extremely cold winters and short, cool summers. The average temperature in January is -20°F, while the average temperature in July is 50°F. Precipitation is low, with most of it falling as snow during the winter months.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, Atqasuk had a population of approximately 233 people. The majority of the residents are of Iñupiat descent. The community is known for its strong cultural heritage and traditional subsistence lifestyle, which includes hunting, fishing, and gathering.

The economy of Atqasuk is primarily based on subsistence activities and local government employment. The North Slope Borough provides most of the jobs in the area, including positions in education, health care, and public services. There is also some seasonal employment related to construction and maintenance projects.

Atqasuk is served by the North Slope Borough School District. The local school, Meade River School, provides education from kindergarten through 12th grade. The school plays a central role in the community, offering various programs and activities for students and residents.

Transportation to and from Atqasuk is primarily by air. The city is served by the Atqasuk Edward Burnell Sr. Memorial Airport, which has regular flights to Utqiaġvik and other nearby communities. There are no roads connecting Atqasuk to other parts of Alaska, making air travel essential for the movement of people and goods.
