History[edit | edit source]

Auchan was founded by Gérard Mulliez in 1961 in Roubaix, a city in Northern France. The first self-service store was opened in Roubaix's district of Hauts-Champs, which translates as "High Fields". The name "Auchan" has its roots in the Hauts-Champs district, as it is a contraction of "au champ", which means "in the field" in French.

Business Model[edit | edit source]

Auchan's business model is based on the concept of a hypermarket, a large retail facility that combines a supermarket and a department store. The company's stores offer a wide range of products, including food, clothing, electronics, and household items. Auchan also operates smaller supermarkets and convenience stores.

International Operations[edit | edit source]

Auchan has expanded its operations internationally, with stores in several countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The company entered the international market in the 1980s, with the opening of its first store in Spain. Since then, Auchan has continued to expand its international presence, with notable operations in countries such as Italy, Poland, China, and Russia.

Corporate Social Responsibility[edit | edit source]

Auchan has implemented several corporate social responsibility initiatives. The company is committed to reducing its environmental impact, promoting sustainable agriculture, and supporting local communities. Auchan's corporate social responsibility efforts also include initiatives to promote healthy eating and reduce food waste.
