Auchentoshan Distillery is a renowned single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in the Lowlands of Scotland. It is situated near Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, and is known for its unique triple distillation process, which is uncommon among Scottish distilleries.

History[edit | edit source]

The distillery was established in 1823, during a period of significant growth in the Scottish whisky industry. Auchentoshan, which means "corner of the field" in Scottish Gaelic, has a long history of producing whisky that is lighter and more delicate than many of its Scottish counterparts.

Throughout its history, Auchentoshan has undergone several ownership changes and renovations. It was significantly damaged during World War II due to its proximity to the Clydebank Blitz, but it was rebuilt and continued to produce whisky.

Production Process[edit | edit source]

Copper stills at Auchentoshan

Auchentoshan is distinctive for its use of triple distillation, a process that is more commonly associated with Irish whiskey. This method involves three separate distillations, which results in a spirit that is lighter and more refined. The distillery uses traditional copper pot stills, and the spirit is matured in a variety of cask types, including American oak, Spanish oak, and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.

The water used in the production process is sourced from the nearby Kilpatrick Hills, which contributes to the unique character of Auchentoshan whisky.

Whisky Range[edit | edit source]

Auchentoshan offers a diverse range of whiskies, each with its own distinct flavor profile. Some of the core expressions include:

  • Auchentoshan American Oak: Aged in first-fill American oak casks, this whisky is known for its vanilla and coconut notes.
  • Auchentoshan Three Wood: Matured in three different cask types, this expression offers rich, complex flavors of dried fruit and toffee.
  • Auchentoshan 12 Year Old: A classic expression with notes of citrus, nuttiness, and a smooth finish.
