Originally born as August Schönberg in Alzey, Hesse, Germany, he emigrated to the United States in 1837, changing his surname to Belmont in honor of the Belmont family, a prominent banking family.
Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]
August Belmont was born into a Jewish family in Germany. He began his career in finance at the Rothschild banking house in Frankfurt before moving to the United States. Upon arriving in New York, Belmont quickly established himself in financial circles and eventually opened his own private banking firm, August Belmont & Co.
Diplomatic Career[edit | edit source]
Belmont's influence extended beyond finance. He was appointed as the United States Ambassador to the Netherlands from 1853 to 1857 under President Franklin Pierce. His diplomatic role helped strengthen U.S. relations in Europe during a period of significant political change.
Political Involvement[edit | edit source]
A prominent figure in the Democratic Party, Belmont was the chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1860 to 1872. He played a crucial role in the elections of that era, supporting candidates such as Stephen A. Douglas and Horatio Seymour.
Horse Racing and Breeding[edit | edit source]
Belmont was also well-known in the world of horse racing. He established the Belmont Racetrack in New York, which is the site of the Belmont Stakes, a major thoroughbred horse race and the third leg of the Triple Crown. His contributions to horse racing are commemorated by the naming of the race after him.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Belmont married Caroline Slidell Perry, daughter of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, who played a significant role in opening Japan to the West. They had several children, including Perry Belmont, who became a notable politician and diplomat.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
August Belmont left a significant legacy in both the financial world and the sport of horse racing. His contributions to banking, politics, and sports continue to be recognized today. Belmont Park and the Belmont Stakes both serve as lasting tributes to his impact.
