Australian Protective Service

The Australian Protective Service (APS) was an Australian government agency responsible for providing protective security services to the Australian government, its officials, and its assets. The APS was established in 1984 and operated under the jurisdiction of the Attorney-General's Department.

History[edit | edit source]

The APS was formed in response to the increasing need for specialized protective security services within Australia. It was initially part of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) but became a separate entity to focus exclusively on protective security. In 2004, the APS was reintegrated into the AFP, becoming the AFP's Protective Service Division.

Functions[edit | edit source]

The primary functions of the APS included:

  • Providing security for Australian government buildings and facilities.
  • Protecting Australian dignitaries and visiting foreign dignitaries.
  • Ensuring the security of critical infrastructure.
  • Offering specialized security services during major events and emergencies.

Operations[edit | edit source]

The APS operated across Australia, with a presence in all major cities and regions. It worked closely with other law enforcement agencies, including the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and state and territory police forces, to ensure comprehensive security coverage.

Training and Equipment[edit | edit source]

APS officers underwent rigorous training to prepare for their protective security roles. This training included:

  • Defensive tactics
  • Firearms proficiency
  • Emergency response
  • Surveillance and counter-surveillance techniques

Officers were equipped with a range of security tools and technologies to perform their duties effectively.

Merger with the AFP[edit | edit source]

In 2004, the APS was merged back into the AFP to streamline operations and enhance the overall security capabilities of the Australian government. The merger aimed to create a more integrated and efficient approach to protective security.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The legacy of the APS continues through the AFP's Protective Service Division, which carries on the mission of providing high-level protective security services to the Australian government and its assets.
