From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Australian Crawl was an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1978. They were named after the front crawl swimming style also known as the Australian crawl.

History[edit | edit source]

Australian Crawl was founded by James Reyne (lead vocals/piano), his younger brother David Reyne (drums), Paul Williams (bass), Simon Binks (guitar) and Brad Robinson (guitar). They were later joined by Guy McDonough (vocals, guitar).

The band's unique blend of rock and pop was heavily influenced by Australian surf culture. Their sound was a combination of rhythm and blues, rock and pop, with a distinctly Australian flavour.

Career[edit | edit source]

Australian Crawl's debut album, Boys Light Up, was released in 1980 and was a major success in Australia. The album spawned several hit singles including "Downhearted", "Beautiful People" and the title track "Boys Light Up".

The band's follow-up albums, Sirocco and Sons of Beaches, continued their success, with both albums reaching the top 10 in the Australian album charts.

Despite their success in Australia, Australian Crawl struggled to break into the international market. They disbanded in 1986, but their music continues to be popular in Australia.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Australian Crawl's influence on Australian music is significant. They were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1996 in recognition of their contribution to Australian music.
