Autogrill is a multinational company based in Italy, primarily known for operating a chain of service stations and restaurants along highways and in airports. It is one of the largest providers of food and beverage services for travelers in Europe and North America.

History[edit | edit source]

Autogrill was founded in 1977, following the merger of three Italian companies: Motta, Alemagna, and Pavesi. These companies were pioneers in the development of highway service areas in Italy, starting as early as the 1950s. The merger was facilitated by IRI (Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale), a state-owned holding company.

In the 1990s, Autogrill expanded internationally, acquiring several companies in Europe and North America. Notably, in 1999, Autogrill acquired HMSHost, a leading provider of food and beverage services in airports across the United States.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Autogrill operates in over 30 countries, with a significant presence in Europe and North America. The company manages a variety of brands, both proprietary and franchised, offering a wide range of food and beverage options to travelers. These include fast food, casual dining, and coffee shops.

The company's operations are divided into two main sectors:

  • Motorway Service Areas: Autogrill operates numerous service stations along major highways, providing travelers with rest areas, fuel, and dining options.
  • Airport Concessions: Through its subsidiary HMSHost, Autogrill manages food and beverage outlets in airports, catering to the needs of passengers and airport staff.

Environmental and Social Responsibility[edit | edit source]

Autogrill is committed to sustainability and social responsibility. The company has implemented various initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, such as energy-efficient practices, waste reduction, and sourcing sustainable products. Autogrill also engages in community support and employee development programs.
