History[edit | edit source]

Autometric Inc. was established as a spin-off from Paramount Pictures, with the goal of working with early satellite imagery technology. The company's initial focus was on the development of image analysis software and hardware solutions for Earth imagery and orthophotography.

Invention of the Chromatron[edit | edit source]

One of Autometric's early successes was the invention of the Chromatron, a color television tube technology. The Chromatron was sold to Sony, which used the technology before developing its own, better-known Trinitron technology.

Acquisition by Raytheon[edit | edit source]

Raytheon, a major defense contractor, acquired Autometric, and the company transitioned its product focus to military and intelligence projects as the Autometric Operation of Raytheon. During this period, Autometric continued to develop and refine its image analysis software and hardware solutions, with an emphasis on applications for defense and intelligence purposes.

Independence from Raytheon[edit | edit source]

After a few years, Autometric split off from Raytheon, becoming an independent company once again. The reasons for the split and the subsequent fate of Autometric remain unclear.

  • Development of early orthophotographic hardware and methodology
  • The company's primary focus was on providing these technologies to various industries, including defense and intelligence, as well as other commercial sectors that required satellite imagery and analysis.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although Autometric Inc. is no longer in operation, its early work in satellite imagery, image analysis, and orthophotography contributed to the development of advanced technologies in these fields. The company's innovations, such as the Chromatron, played a role in shaping the television technology landscape, and its contributions to image analysis and satellite imagery continue to influence the industry.
