Avast Software is a multinational cybersecurity software company headquartered in Prague, Czech Republic. Avast is known for its range of antivirus and internet security applications for various platforms, including Microsoft Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. The company was founded in 1988 by Pavel Baudiš and Eduard Kučera as a cooperative and has since grown into a global leader in security software.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Avast date back to 1988 when Pavel Baudiš discovered a Vienna virus on a floppy disk and wrote a program to remove it. Together with Eduard Kučera, he founded Alwil Software, which later became Avast Software. The company transitioned from a cooperative to a private company in 1991, and in the early 2000s, it adopted a freemium model, offering a base version of its antivirus software for free while charging for advanced features.

Products and Services[edit | edit source]

Avast offers a wide range of security products, including:

  • Avast Free Antivirus: A free version of the antivirus software that provides basic protection against viruses and malware.
  • Avast Premium Security: Offers advanced protection against viruses, spyware, and other threats, including ransomware and phishing attacks.
  • Avast SecureLine VPN: A VPN service that encrypts users' internet connections for safer browsing.
  • Avast Cleanup: A tool designed to optimize system performance by removing unused files and tuning system settings.
  • Avast Secure Browser: A web browser with built-in security and privacy features to protect users from online threats and tracking.

Acquisitions[edit | edit source]

Over the years, Avast has expanded its portfolio and market presence through several strategic acquisitions, including:

  • AVG Technologies: In 2016, Avast acquired AVG Technologies, another renowned antivirus software company, for $1.3 billion, significantly expanding its user base and technological capabilities.
  • Piriform: The maker of CCleaner, a popular system optimization tool, was acquired by Avast in 2017, further broadening its range of system maintenance tools.

Privacy and Security Controversies[edit | edit source]

Avast has faced criticism and controversy regarding user privacy. In 2020, it was revealed that Avast had been selling user data through its subsidiary, Jumpshot. This data, which was allegedly anonymized, included detailed browsing history information. Following public backlash and scrutiny, Avast announced the closure of Jumpshot and ceased the sale of user data.

Corporate Social Responsibility[edit | edit source]

Avast is involved in various social responsibility initiatives, focusing on education, community, and internet safety. The company supports educational programs aimed at promoting digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness among children and young people.
