Barbara Elaine Smith, better known as B. Smith, was an American restaurateur, model, author, and television host. She was born on January 24, 1949, in Everson, Pennsylvania, and passed away on February 22, 2020, at the age of 71 in Long Island, New York.

Smith began her career as a model, becoming one of the first African-American women to grace the cover of Mademoiselle magazine in 1976. She later transitioned into the culinary world, opening her first restaurant, B. Smith's, in New York City in 1986. The restaurant quickly gained popularity and became a hotspot for celebrities and food enthusiasts alike.

As a restaurateur, Smith was known for her innovative and diverse menu, which combined elements of American, Caribbean, and Southern cuisines. She also authored several cookbooks, including B. Smith Cooks Southern-Style and B. Smith: Rituals and Celebrations, which showcased her unique culinary style and provided readers with delicious recipes and entertaining tips.

In addition to her successful restaurant ventures and cookbooks, Smith hosted her own television show, B. Smith with Style, which aired on various networks including NBC and Sirius XM Radio. Smith was married to Dan Gasby from 1992 until her death in 2020. Gasby was also her business partner and collaborator, helping her expand her brand and restaurant empire. Despite facing challenges in their relationship, including Smith's diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's disease in 2013, the couple remained committed to each other and advocated for Alzheimer's awareness and research.
