BACE1-AS
BACE1-AS
Overview[edit | edit source]
BACE1-AS is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is involved in the regulation of the BACE1 gene. BACE1, or beta-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1, is an important enzyme in the production of beta-amyloid peptides, which are implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease.
Function[edit | edit source]
BACE1-AS is known to regulate the expression of the BACE1 gene through various mechanisms. It acts as an antisense RNA, meaning it is transcribed from the opposite DNA strand of the BACE1 gene. This antisense RNA can modulate the stability and translation of the BACE1 mRNA, thereby influencing the levels of BACE1 protein.
Role in Alzheimer's Disease[edit | edit source]
The dysregulation of BACE1-AS has been associated with Alzheimer's disease. Increased levels of BACE1-AS have been observed in the brains of Alzheimer's patients, which correlates with elevated BACE1 expression and increased production of beta-amyloid peptides. This suggests that BACE1-AS may contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease by enhancing the amyloidogenic pathway.
Research and Therapeutic Potential[edit | edit source]
Research into BACE1-AS is ongoing, with studies focusing on its potential as a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease. By modulating the expression of BACE1-AS, it may be possible to reduce BACE1 activity and subsequently decrease the production of beta-amyloid peptides. This approach could offer a novel strategy for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
