The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTA Awards) are presented in an annual show hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). These awards are given to honor the best in national and foreign films, television, children's entertainment, and interactive media.
History[edit | edit source]
The BAFTA Awards were first held in 1947, originally known as the British Film Academy Awards. The organization was founded by David Lean, Alexander Korda, Carol Reed, Charles Laughton, Roger Manvell, and other leading figures in the British film industry. The first awards ceremony took place in 1948, celebrating films from 1947 and 1948.
In 1958, the British Film Academy merged with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors to form the Society of Film and Television Arts, which eventually became BAFTA in 1976.
The BAFTA Awards cover a wide range of categories, including:
- Best Film
- Best Director
- Best Actor in a Leading Role
- Best Actress in a Leading Role
- Best Supporting Actor
- Best Supporting Actress
- Best Original Screenplay
- Best Adapted Screenplay
- Best Animated Film
- Best Documentary
- Best Film Not in the English Language
In addition to these, there are awards for technical achievements such as cinematography, editing, production design, and sound.

BAFTA also hosts a separate ceremony for television, known as the British Academy Television Awards. These awards recognize excellence in television programming and performance.

The British Academy Children's Awards celebrate the best in children's media, including television, film, and online content.
Video Games[edit | edit source]
Since 2003, BAFTA has also recognized achievements in the video game industry with the British Academy Games Awards.
