BIDS

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

BIDS or Brain Imaging Data Structure is a standard in specifying the arrangement of neuroimaging data in a file system. It includes specifications for data organization, file formats, and metadata. BIDS is used in neuroimaging to facilitate data sharing and analysis.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) is a standard that prescribes a formalism for the arrangement of neuroimaging data in a filesystem. It also provides guidelines for the naming and organization of data files, and the representation of metadata. The goal of BIDS is to make neuroimaging data more accessible and sharable by creating a common standard that is easy to use and understand.

History[edit | edit source]

BIDS was first proposed in a 2016 paper by Gorgolewski et al. The authors argued that a standard for neuroimaging data organization was necessary to facilitate data sharing and reproducibility in neuroimaging research. Since then, BIDS has been adopted by a number of neuroimaging research groups and has been used in a variety of studies.

Structure[edit | edit source]

A BIDS dataset is organized in a hierarchical fashion, with each level of the hierarchy corresponding to a particular aspect of the data. At the top level, a dataset is divided into subjects, each of which has their own directory. Within each subject directory, data is further divided into sessions, runs, and tasks. Each of these levels has its own set of associated metadata, which is stored in JSON files.

Applications[edit | edit source]

BIDS has been used in a variety of neuroimaging studies, including functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and electroencephalography (EEG). By providing a standard for data organization, BIDS makes it easier for researchers to share and analyze neuroimaging data.
