Babiniotis dictionary

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Babiniotis Dictionary is a comprehensive Greek dictionary compiled by the Greek linguist Georgios Babiniotis. It is considered one of the most authoritative and comprehensive dictionaries of the Greek language.

History[edit | edit source]

The Babiniotis Dictionary was first published in 1998 by Lexicology Centre and Babiniotis himself. It was the result of a decade-long project that aimed to create a comprehensive and authoritative dictionary of the Greek language. The dictionary is updated regularly to include new words and phrases that have entered the Greek language.

Content[edit | edit source]

The Babiniotis Dictionary contains over 150,000 entries, including words, phrases, idioms, and proverbs. Each entry includes a definition, examples of usage, and information on the word's etymology and history. The dictionary also includes a comprehensive grammar guide and a section on the history of the Greek language.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The Babiniotis Dictionary has been widely praised for its comprehensiveness and accuracy. It is used as a reference by Greek schools and universities, and is considered a standard work in the field of Greek lexicography. However, it has also been criticized for its conservative approach to language change and for its lack of inclusion of colloquial and dialectal forms.
