Bainbridge is a term with multiple meanings in the medical field. It can refer to the Bainbridge reflex, a physiological reflex that increases the heart rate in response to an increase in blood volume. It is named after the British physiologist Francis Arthur Bainbridge (1874–1921). The term can also refer to Bainbridge Island, Washington, a city in the United States that is home to several medical facilities.

Bainbridge reflex[edit | edit source]

The Bainbridge reflex or atrial reflex is an increase in heart rate due to an increase in central venous pressure. Increased blood volume is detected by stretch receptors (baroreceptors) located in both atria at the venoatrial junctions. The reflex was first described by the British physiologist Francis Arthur Bainbridge in 1915.
