Balblair Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Edderton, Ross-shire, Scotland. Established in 1790 by John Ross, it is one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is renowned for its unique practice of releasing vintage whiskies, where each bottle is labeled with the year of distillation rather than an age statement.

History[edit | edit source]

The Balblair Distillery was founded by John Ross in 1790, making it one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland. The distillery was initially a small-scale operation, but it expanded significantly in the 19th century under the management of Andrew Ross, John Ross's son.

In 1894, the distillery was rebuilt by the architect Charles C. Doig, who was responsible for designing many of Scotland's distilleries during this period. The distillery remained in the Ross family until 1911, when it was sold to Robert Cumming, who further expanded the distillery's operations.

Production[edit | edit source]

The Balblair Distillery is known for its unique practice of releasing vintage whiskies. Unlike most distilleries, which label their bottles with an age statement indicating the number of years the whisky was aged, Balblair labels its bottles with the year of distillation. This practice allows the distillery to showcase the unique characteristics of each vintage.

The distillery sources its water from the Allt Dearg burn, which is known for its pure, soft water. The distillery uses traditional copper pot stills for distillation, and the whisky is aged in a variety of cask types, including American oak, Spanish oak, and sherry casks.

Products[edit | edit source]

The Balblair Distillery produces a range of vintage whiskies, with each vintage offering a unique flavor profile. Some of the notable vintages include the 1969, 1983, and 1990 vintages. The distillery also produces a core range of whiskies, which includes the Balblair 12 Year Old, Balblair 15 Year Old, Balblair 18 Year Old, and Balblair 25 Year Old.
