Banff Distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery located in Banff, Scotland. Established in 1824, the distillery was known for producing single malt whisky. The distillery was situated near the River Deveron, which provided a reliable water source essential for whisky production.

History[edit | edit source]

The Banff Distillery was founded by James McKilligan & Co. in 1824. It was initially located at Inverboyndie, near Banff. The distillery underwent several ownership changes throughout its history. In 1863, it was acquired by Alex Mackay & Co., and later by James Simpson & Co. in 1877.

In 1877, a fire severely damaged the distillery, leading to its reconstruction. The distillery continued to operate until 1983 when it was closed due to economic pressures and a decline in demand for whisky. The buildings were eventually demolished in 1991.

Production[edit | edit source]

Banff Distillery produced single malt whisky using traditional methods. The whisky was known for its distinctive flavor profile, which included notes of fruit, spice, and a hint of smoke. The distillery used copper pot stills and aged its whisky in oak casks, which contributed to the unique characteristics of the final product.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although the Banff Distillery is no longer operational, its whisky remains highly regarded among collectors and enthusiasts. Bottles of Banff single malt whisky are considered rare and valuable, often fetching high prices at auctions.
