Bangers and mash

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Bangers and Mash is a traditional British dish that consists of sausages (bangers) and mashed potatoes (mash). It is a popular comfort food in the United Kingdom and is often served with onion gravy.

Ingredients[edit | edit source]

To make bangers and mash, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 6 pork sausages
  • 4 large potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions[edit | edit source]

Follow these steps to prepare bangers and mash:

  1. Start by boiling the potatoes in a large pot of salted water until they are tender. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes.
  2. While the potatoes are boiling, heat a tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sausages and cook them until they are browned on all sides. This usually takes about 10 minutes. Once cooked, remove the sausages from the skillet and set them aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and the chopped onion. Cook the onion until it becomes translucent and slightly caramelized.
  4. In a separate small bowl, mix the flour with a little bit of water to create a slurry. Add the slurry to the skillet with the onions and stir well.
  5. Slowly pour in the beef or vegetable broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook until it thickens into a gravy-like consistency.
  6. While the gravy is simmering, drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the milk and remaining butter to the pot and mash the potatoes until they are smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve the bangers on top of a bed of mashed potatoes and pour the onion gravy over the sausages. Garnish with some chopped parsley, if desired.

Variations[edit | edit source]

There are several variations of bangers and mash that you can try:

  • Cumberland sausages are a popular choice for bangers and mash. They have a coarser texture and are seasoned with herbs and spices.
  • For a healthier option, you can use chicken or turkey sausages instead of pork sausages.
  • Add some caramelized onions to the mashed potatoes for extra flavor.
  • Serve the bangers and mash with a side of peas or steamed vegetables.
