Barbarea orthoceras is a species of flowering plant in the mustard family known by the common name American yellowrocket. It is native to North America, where it can be found in many types of habitat.

Barbarea orthoceras is a biennial or perennial herb growing up to a meter tall. The leaves are up to 20 centimeters long and are divided into several toothed, lobed, or entire leaflets. The inflorescence is a raceme of mustardlike flowers with yellow petals each a few millimeters long. The fruit is a narrow silique up to 5 centimeters long.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Barbarea orthoceras is native to North America. It is found in many types of habitat, including grassland, woodland, and areas of disturbed ground. It is also found in wetland habitats, such as marshes and riverbanks.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The plant has been used in traditional medicine by Native American tribes. The Pomo used it as a remedy for colds and sore throats, while the Miwok used it to treat stomach complaints.

Conservation status[edit | edit source]

While Barbarea orthoceras is not currently considered threatened, its habitat is under pressure from human activities such as agriculture and urban development.
