Barry Black
Barry Black is the 62nd Chaplain of the United States Senate, serving since 2003. He is the first African American and the first Seventh-day Adventist to hold the office. Black was born on November 1, 1948, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Barry Black was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended the Baltimore City College for high school. Black earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology from Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. He later received a Master of Divinity degree from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from North Carolina Central University, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer Theological Seminary).
Military Career[edit | edit source]
Before becoming the Senate Chaplain, Black served over 27 years in the United States Navy as a chaplain, retiring with the rank of Rear Admiral. During his military career, he held various positions, including the Chief of Navy Chaplains. His service included assignments on aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, and shore installations.
Senate Chaplaincy[edit | edit source]
Barry Black was appointed the 62nd Chaplain of the United States Senate on June 27, 2003. As Senate Chaplain, he opens each session of the Senate with a prayer and provides counseling and spiritual care for Senators, their families, and staff. He also hosts Bible study groups and prayer meetings.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Barry Black is married to Brenda Black, and they have three children. He is known for his dynamic speaking style and has authored several books on spirituality and leadership.
