Bartolo Colón (born May 24, 1973), also known as "Big Sexy", is a Dominican-American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for several teams from 1997 to 2018. Colón was known for his durability and ability to pitch effectively well into his 40s.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Colón was born in Altamira, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. He was raised in a home without electricity, running water, or indoor plumbing. He used to work alongside his father, Miguel, in the coffee and fruit fields to help support their family.

Career[edit | edit source]

Colón began his professional career in 1993, signing with the Cleveland Indians as a free agent. He made his MLB debut in 1997. Over his career, Colón played for a total of 11 teams, including the Montreal Expos, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, and New York Mets, among others.

Colón's career highlights include winning the Cy Young Award in 2005 while playing for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He was also a four-time MLB All-Star, and in 2016, at the age of 42, he became the oldest player in MLB history to hit his first career home run.

Colón is married to Rosanna Colón. The couple has four sons together. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2014.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Colón is considered one of the best pitchers of his generation. He is the third Dominican-born player to win 200 games in the MLB. His longevity in the sport, combined with his ability to remain effective into his 40s, has earned him a place in baseball history.
