Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is a short-legged breed of dog in the hound family. The Basset is a scent hound that was originally bred for the purpose of hunting hare. Their keen sense of smell and ability to ground-scent is second only to the Bloodhound.

History[edit | edit source]

The Basset Hound was bred to hunt. Its keen nose and short stature are suited to small-game hunting on foot. A variety of Basset Hound developed purely for hunting by trailing scents is known as the Basset Artésien Normand.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Basset Hounds are usually bicolours or tricolours of standard hound colouration. In physical characteristics, the Basset Hound is unique: a large dog on short legs. Their droopy eyes and long ears are their most distinctive features.

Temperament[edit | edit source]

Basset Hounds are known for their gentle, loyal nature. They are extremely friendly dogs and get along well with other animals and humans. They are also known for their stubbornness, as they are not always obedient to their owners.

Health[edit | edit source]

Basset Hounds are prone to health issues including obesity, eye problems, and joint issues. Regular exercise and a balanced diet are crucial for their overall health.

In popular culture[edit | edit source]

Basset Hounds are often portrayed in popular culture due to their distinctive appearance. Notable examples include the logo for Hush Puppies shoes and the dog character Droopy, from the animated series by Tex Avery.
