Batibat

Batibat[edit | edit source]

The Batibat is a mythical creature from Philippine mythology, specifically from the folklore of the Ilocano people. It is often depicted as a vengeful spirit that takes the form of a large, old, and obese woman.

Description[edit | edit source]

Batibats are believed to reside in trees, particularly bamboo and balete trees. When these trees are cut down and used as posts or beams in houses, the Batibat inhabiting the tree is said to follow and take residence in the house. The Batibat is known for its malevolent nature, especially towards those who disturb its home.

Behavior[edit | edit source]

The Batibat is notorious for causing what is known as "bangungot" or sudden unexplained nocturnal death syndrome. It is said that the Batibat sits on the chest of its victim while they sleep, suffocating them and causing them to experience nightmares. This is often described as a form of sleep paralysis.

Protection and Remedies[edit | edit source]

To protect oneself from the Batibat, it is advised to avoid sleeping near posts or beams made from trees that might have been inhabited by these spirits. Some folklore suggests placing a piece of wood or a pillow between the bed and the wall to prevent the Batibat from reaching the sleeper. Additionally, it is recommended to bite one's thumb or wiggle one's toes to wake up from the Batibat's grip.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

The Batibat is a significant figure in Philippine folklore, serving as a cautionary tale about respecting nature and the spirits that dwell within it. It reflects the cultural belief in anito, or spirits, that inhabit natural objects and the importance of living in harmony with the environment.

Related Mythology[edit | edit source]

The Batibat is similar to other sleep-related spirits and creatures found in various cultures, such as the Mare in Germanic folklore and the Succubus in Western mythology. These entities are often associated with sleep disturbances and nightmares.
