Baud rate is a term used in telecommunications and computer networking to represent the maximum rate of data transfer that can be transmitted over a communication channel. It is typically measured in symbols per second or pulses per second. The term is derived from the name of Emile Baudot, a pioneer in telegraphy and data communication.

Definition[edit | edit source]

The baud rate is defined as the number of distinct symbol changes (state transitions or level changes) made to the transmission medium per second in a digitally modulated signal or a line code. The symbol rate is related to, but not always equal to, the bit rate, which is the number of bits transmitted per second.

Calculation[edit | edit source]

The baud rate is calculated using the formula:

Baud rate = (Number of bits / Time) bits per second

This formula shows that the baud rate is determined by the number of bits transmitted per unit of time. The time unit is usually one second.

Baud rate and bit rate[edit | edit source]

While baud rate and bit rate are often used interchangeably, they are not the same. Bit rate refers to the number of bits transmitted per second, while baud rate refers to the number of signal units per second. In simple systems where each signal unit carries one bit, the baud rate and the bit rate are the same. However, in more complex systems where each signal unit can carry more than one bit, the bit rate can be higher than the baud rate.

Several factors can affect the baud rate of a communication system. These include the bandwidth of the system, the signal-to-noise ratio, the type of modulation used, and the characteristics of the transmission medium.

Baud rate in modern systems[edit | edit source]

In modern communication systems, high baud rates are achieved using sophisticated modulation schemes that allow multiple bits to be transmitted in each symbol. For example, in quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), each symbol can represent multiple bits, allowing for higher data rates without increasing the symbol rate.
