Bay scallops (Argopecten irradians) are a species of scallop native to the northwest Atlantic coast, from New England to the Gulf of Mexico. They are particularly noted for their sweet flavor and tender texture, making them a prized ingredient in culinary dishes. Unlike their larger cousin, the sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus), bay scallops are smaller, usually measuring up to 2 inches in diameter.

Bay scallops have a distinctive shell with a radiating fluted pattern and can vary in color from a pale cream to a vibrant orange. They possess a row of blue eyes along the edge of their mantle, which they use to detect movement and light, helping them to avoid predators. Bay scallops are filter feeders, consuming plankton and other small particles of food by filtering water through their gills.

Bay scallops are found in shallow, coastal waters, preferring sandy or eelgrass habitats. Eelgrass beds are particularly important as they provide shelter from predators and support a rich variety of life that scallops feed on. The health of bay scallop populations is closely linked to the health of these eelgrass ecosystems.

The life cycle of bay scallops is relatively short, with most living only up to two years. They reach reproductive maturity at one year of age, and spawning occurs during the warmer months. Fertilization is external, with females releasing eggs and males releasing sperm into the water column. The resulting larvae are planktonic, drifting with the currents until they are large enough to settle on the seafloor, where they continue to grow and mature.
