Beaded Lizard

The Beaded Lizard (Heloderma horridum) is a species of venomous lizard found primarily in Mexico and southern Guatemala. It is one of only two species of venomous lizards in the world, the other being its close relative, the Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum).

Description[edit | edit source]

The Beaded Lizard is named for its distinctive skin, which is covered in small, bead-like scales. These lizards are typically black or dark brown in color, with yellow or white spots or bands. Adult Beaded Lizards can reach lengths of up to 90 cm (35 in), making them one of the largest lizard species in their native range.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Beaded Lizards are found in the Pacific lowlands of Mexico, from Sonora to Guatemala. They inhabit a variety of habitats, including tropical dry forest, thorn scrub, and pine-oak forest. They are primarily terrestrial, but can also climb trees and swim.

Behavior and Diet[edit | edit source]

Beaded Lizards are nocturnal and spend most of their day hiding in burrows or under rocks. They are carnivorous, feeding on a diet of small mammals, birds, eggs, and insects. They use their venomous bite to subdue prey.

Reproduction[edit | edit source]

Beaded Lizards are oviparous, with females laying clutches of 2-12 eggs in the late summer or early fall. The eggs are incubated for approximately six months before hatching.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

The Beaded Lizard is listed as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its population is declining due to habitat loss and persecution by humans, who often kill the lizards out of fear of their venomous bite.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

In some parts of Mexico, the Beaded Lizard is believed to have magical or medicinal properties. However, these beliefs have also led to the persecution of the species.
