Beclometasone dipropionate
Beclometasone dipropionate is a type of corticosteroid medication that is primarily used in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is also used to treat various skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis. Beclometasone dipropionate is marketed under several brand names, including Qvar, Clenil, Beconase, and others.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Beclometasone dipropionate is a prodrug that is metabolized into the active form, beclometasone-17-monopropionate (17-BMP), in the lungs. It works by reducing inflammation and swelling in the airways, making it easier to breathe. It is a potent glucocorticoid receptor agonist, with a high affinity for the glucocorticoid receptor.

Beclometasone dipropionate is used in the long-term management of asthma and COPD. It is also used to treat nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis and non-allergic rhinitis, and for the treatment of various skin disorders.
Side effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of beclometasone dipropionate include throat irritation, hoarseness, and fungal infections of the mouth. More serious side effects may include adrenal suppression, bone loss, cataracts, and glaucoma.

Beclometasone dipropionate was first approved for medical use in the United States in 1976. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, indicating that it is one of the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.
