Bedford is a historic market town and the county town of Bedfordshire, England. It is located in the eastern part of England, near the River Great Ouse, which has been instrumental in its development as a river port. Bedford is known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and educational institutions such as Bedford School and University of Bedfordshire.

Bedford was founded at a ford on the River Great Ouse, and is thought to have been the burial place of Offa of Mercia. The town was granted borough status in 1165 and has been a market town since the Middle Ages. The town continued to grow throughout the medieval period and into the Tudor era with the arrival of Italian immigrants, who established themselves in the area.

Bedford is located in the southeast of England, along the River Great Ouse. The town is surrounded by countryside and has a number of parks and open spaces, including Bedford Park and Priory Country Park. The town's location has made it a hub for transportation and commerce.

Bedford is well connected by road and rail. The town is served by two railway stations, Bedford railway station and Bedford St Johns railway station, and is close to major roads such as the A6 and A421.
