Before Present
Before Present
Before Present (BP) is a time scale used mainly in archaeology, geology, and other scientific disciplines to specify when events in the past occurred. The "present" in "Before Present" is defined as the year 1950 AD. This standardization allows for a consistent reference point when discussing dates in the past.
Definition[edit | edit source]
The term "Before Present" is used to express dates or time periods in the past relative to the year 1950. This year was chosen as the "present" because it marks the advent of radiocarbon dating, a revolutionary method for dating organic materials. Radiocarbon dating was developed in the late 1940s, and 1950 was selected as a convenient reference point.
Usage[edit | edit source]
BP is commonly used in fields such as archaeology, geology, paleontology, and climatology. It is particularly useful when discussing time periods that predate written history or when comparing dates from different regions and cultures.
For example, an archaeological site might be dated to 5000 BP, meaning it is approximately 5000 years before 1950, or around 3050 BC. This system allows for a uniform way to discuss ancient dates without the complications of different calendar systems.
Radiocarbon Dating[edit | edit source]
Radiocarbon dating is a method for determining the age of an object containing organic material by measuring the amount of carbon-14 it contains. The technique was developed by Willard Libby in the late 1940s, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1960.
The "Before Present" system is particularly tied to radiocarbon dating because the half-life of carbon-14 is approximately 5730 years, making it suitable for dating objects up to about 50,000 years old. The BP scale provides a consistent framework for reporting radiocarbon dates.
Calibration[edit | edit source]
Radiocarbon dates are often calibrated to account for variations in atmospheric carbon-14 levels over time. Calibration curves are used to convert radiocarbon years (BP) into calendar years. This process is necessary because the concentration of carbon-14 in the atmosphere has not been constant over time.
