These devices are particularly popular for sport climbing and situations where the climber may be hanging on the rope for extended periods.

The Figure 8 device, named for its shape, allows the rope to be wrapped around its body in a pattern that creates friction. This device is less commonly used for belaying but is popular for rappelling (abseiling) due to its ability to dissipate heat efficiently.

Italian Hitch (Munter Hitch)[edit | edit source]

While not a device, the Italian Hitch or Munter Hitch is a method of belaying directly with the rope and a carabiner. It is a versatile technique useful in emergency situations or when a belay device is not available.

Choosing the right belay device depends on the type of climbing, the climber's experience, and personal preference. Factors to consider include the device's weight, ease of use, and whether it is designed for single or double ropes. Proper knowledge and training in the use of a belay device are crucial for safety.
