- Belton was established in 1855 as a railway junction, and its economy was primarily based on the cotton industry. The city is named after Judge John Belton O'Neall, a prominent South Carolina legislator.

- Belton is located in the northwestern part of South Carolina. It is approximately 20 miles east of Anderson, SC and about 25 miles south of Greenville, SC.
