Benadryl
Benadryl is a brand name for the generic drug diphenhydramine, a first-generation antihistamine. It is primarily used to relieve symptoms of allergic reactions, including hay fever, and to prevent and treat motion sickness.
Pharmacology[edit]
Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. It is a competitive antagonist of the histamine H1 receptor, which means it prevents histamine from binding to these receptors and exerting its effects.
Uses[edit]
Benadryl is most commonly used to relieve symptoms of allergies, such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat. It can also be used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. Moreover, it can help patients with mild forms of Parkinson's disease manage their symptoms.
Side Effects[edit]
Common side effects of Benadryl include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth/nose/throat, headache, upset stomach, constipation, or trouble sleeping. In some cases, it can cause confusion and sedation, particularly in the elderly.
Precautions[edit]
Due to its sedating properties, caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery after taking Benadryl. It should be used cautiously in individuals with certain health conditions, including glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, and urinary retention.
