Benny Hill (21 January 1924 – 20 April 1992) was a British comedian, actor, and singer, best known for his television programme The Benny Hill Show.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Born as Alfred Hawthorne Hill in Southampton, England, Benny Hill showed an early interest in entertainment. He left school at the age of 15 and worked in various jobs, including milkman, bridge operator, and drummer, before entering the entertainment industry.

Career[edit | edit source]

Hill began his career in radio, but quickly transitioned to television with the advent of the medium in the 1950s. His show, The Benny Hill Show, was a mix of slapstick, burlesque, and double entendre, and ran in various forms from 1955 to 1991. The show was broadcast in over 140 countries and made Hill one of the most famous comedians in the world.

Hill was also a prolific songwriter and singer. His song "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)" was the UK's Christmas number one single in 1971.

Despite criticism for its often risqué humour, The Benny Hill Show has had a lasting impact on comedy. Hill's influence can be seen in the work of many comedians and comedy writers. He is also remembered for his contributions to music and his unique comedic style, which often involved visual gags and wordplay.

Death[edit | edit source]

Benny Hill died on 20 April 1992 at the age of 68. His death was attributed to coronary thrombosis. He was unmarried and had no children.
