Benromach distillery

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Benromach Distillery is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in Forres, Moray, Scotland. The distillery was originally established in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman. It has changed hands several times over the years and is currently owned by Gordon & MacPhail, an independent bottler and distiller based in Elgin, Moray.

History[edit | edit source]

The Benromach Distillery was founded in 1898 during the Victorian era, a period of rapid growth and innovation in the whisky industry. However, the distillery faced numerous challenges in its early years, including the economic downturn of the Pattison Crash and the impact of Prohibition in the United States. Despite these setbacks, Benromach persevered and continued to produce whisky until it was mothballed in 1983.

In 1993, the distillery was purchased by Gordon & MacPhail, who undertook a complete refurbishment of the facilities. The distillery was officially reopened in 1998 by Prince Charles, marking a new chapter in the distillery's history.

Production[edit | edit source]

The Benromach Distillery produces a range of single malt whiskies using traditional methods. The distillery sources its water from the nearby Chapelton Spring, and uses locally grown barley in its production process. The whisky is matured in a variety of cask types, including bourbon barrels, sherry casks, and port pipes, which contribute to the complex flavours and aromas of the final product.

Benromach is known for its classic Speyside character, which is often described as a balance of fruity, malty, and slightly peaty flavours. The distillery's core range includes the Benromach 10 Year Old, the Benromach 15 Year Old, and the Benromach Organic, which was the first certified organic single malt whisky when it was released in 2006.

Visitor Centre[edit | edit source]

The Benromach Distillery also features a visitor centre, which offers guided tours and tastings. The visitor centre includes a shop where guests can purchase a range of Benromach whiskies, as well as other merchandise.
