Established in 1999, it spans an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers and represents one of the first private nature reserves in Lebanon, initiated by the local community and environmental activists. The reserve is notable for its rich biodiversity, including a variety of endemic and rare plant species, as well as its role in the conservation of the Lebanese natural heritage.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Bentaël Nature Reserve was created to protect the natural landscape and biodiversity of the region from increasing threats such as urbanization, deforestation, and pollution. It encompasses a range of ecosystems, including forests, scrublands, and cliffs, which provide habitats for numerous species of flora and fauna. The reserve is particularly renowned for its cedar forests, which are emblematic of the Lebanese natural landscape.
