Berkeley Memorial
Berkeley Memorial is a prominent landmark located in the heart of Basseterre, the capital city of Saint Kitts and Nevis. This iconic structure, also known as the Berkeley Memorial Clock, stands at the intersection of the city's two main streets, Bank Street and Fort Street, within The Circus, a roundabout that is modeled after Piccadilly Circus in London, England. The memorial is not only a significant historical monument but also serves as a central point of reference and a popular meeting spot for locals and tourists alike.
History[edit | edit source]
The Berkeley Memorial was erected in 1883 to honor Thomas Berkeley Hardtman Berkeley, a well-respected resident of Saint Kitts who served in various public offices, including President of the General Legislative Council and a member of the Federal Council of the Leeward Islands. His contributions to the public life and welfare of the citizens of Saint Kitts were highly regarded, and the memorial was commissioned upon his death as a tribute to his legacy.
Design[edit | edit source]
The structure is an ornate cast iron clock tower and drinking fountain, which showcases Victorian architecture's intricacy and elegance. It was manufactured by Walter Macfarlane & Co. at the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow, Scotland, a testament to the global reach and influence of British architectural styles during the Victorian era. The memorial features four clock faces, allowing the time to be seen from any direction, and originally included drinking fountains on each of its four sides to serve the public.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
Over the years, the Berkeley Memorial has become an emblematic symbol of Basseterre, reflecting the city's colonial history and its evolution into a modern Caribbean capital. It is featured in various forms of media and is a popular subject for photographs by visitors. The site around The Circus and the memorial itself is often bustling with activity, serving as a central hub for public transportation, commerce, and social gatherings.
Preservation[edit | edit source]
Given its age and historical value, the preservation of the Berkeley Memorial is of great importance to the local community and heritage conservationists. Efforts have been made to maintain its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal, ensuring that it continues to be a source of pride and historical interest for future generations.
