Bernie Sanders is an American politician and activist who has served as a United States Senator from Vermont since 2007. Born on September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, Sanders is known for his advocacy of progressive policies and has been a leading figure in contemporary American politics. Before his tenure in the Senate, Sanders served as the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, from 1981 to 1989, and later represented Vermont's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007.
Sanders identifies as a democratic socialist and has focused on issues such as income inequality, universal healthcare, and climate change. He has been a vocal critic of the influence of money in politics and has advocated for a more equitable economic system. Bernie Sanders was born to a working-class Jewish family in Brooklyn. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for 16 years. He co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus in 1991 and was known for his opposition to the Iraq War and his support for veterans' benefits.

Sanders was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006 and has been re-elected multiple times. In the Senate, he has served on committees such as the Committee on Budget; the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources; and the Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
