Bernie Whitebear, 1971

Bernie Whitebear (September 27, 1937 – July 16, 2000) was a prominent Native American activist and leader of the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation. He played a significant role in advocating for the rights and welfare of Native Americans in the United States.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Bernie Whitebear was born on September 27, 1937, in Seattle, Washington. He was of Sin Aikst (Lakes) and Colville descent. Whitebear grew up in the Colville Indian Reservation in northeastern Washington. His early experiences on the reservation and the challenges faced by Native American communities deeply influenced his later activism.

Activism[edit | edit source]

Whitebear is best known for his role in the occupation of Fort Lawton in 1970. Along with other Native American activists, he led the occupation to protest the federal government's failure to honor treaties and to demand the return of surplus land to Native American tribes. The occupation ultimately led to the establishment of the Daybreak Star Cultural Center in Discovery Park, which serves as a cultural and community center for Native Americans in the Seattle area.

United Indians of All Tribes Foundation[edit | edit source]

In 1970, Whitebear co-founded the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (UIATF), an organization dedicated to improving the social, economic, and educational conditions of Native Americans. Under his leadership, the UIATF developed numerous programs and services, including health care, education, and cultural preservation initiatives.
