Bertrand Snell

Bertrand Hollis Snell (December 9, 1870 – February 2, 1958) was an American politician and a prominent member of the Republican Party. He served as a U.S. Representative from New York and was the House Minority Leader from 1931 to 1939.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Bertrand Snell was born in Colton, New York. He attended the local public schools and later graduated from Potsdam Normal School (now SUNY Potsdam) in 1894. After completing his education, Snell engaged in various business ventures, including the lumber and paper industries.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Snell's political career began at the local level, where he served on the St. Lawrence County Board of Supervisors. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1915, representing New York's 31st congressional district. Snell was re-elected multiple times, serving until 1939.

House Minority Leader[edit | edit source]

In 1931, Snell was elected as the House Minority Leader, a position he held until his retirement in 1939. During his tenure, he was known for his opposition to many of the New Deal policies implemented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Snell was a staunch advocate for fiscal conservatism and limited government intervention in the economy.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After retiring from Congress, Snell returned to his business interests in New York. He remained active in public affairs and continued to influence Republican politics. Bertrand Snell passed away on February 2, 1958, in Potsdam, New York.

Snell's contributions to American politics, particularly his leadership during a challenging period in U.S. history, are remembered as significant. His legacy is commemorated in various ways, including the naming of the Bertrand H. Snell Hall at SUNY Potsdam.
