Bet van Beeren
Bet van Beeren (1902–1967) was a prominent figure in the Amsterdam LGBTQ+ community and the owner of Café 't Mandje, one of the first openly gay bars in the world. Born in Amsterdam, van Beeren was openly lesbian at a time when the LGBTQ+ community faced significant societal and legal challenges. Her establishment, Café 't Mandje, located on the Zeedijk in Amsterdam, became a safe haven for the gay community, offering a space where individuals could express their identity freely.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Bet van Beeren was born in 1902 in Amsterdam, into a working-class family. From a young age, she was known for her charismatic personality and her openness about her sexual orientation, which was quite rare and courageous during that period.
Café 't Mandje[edit | edit source]
In 1927, van Beeren took over Café 't Mandje from her uncle. She transformed the bar into a welcoming place for the LGBTQ+ community, at a time when homosexuality was still criminalized in many parts of the world. The café was decorated with memorabilia and photographs of its patrons, creating a sense of belonging and community. Van Beeren was known for her generosity and her role as a protector of her customers, often standing up to police raids and societal prejudice.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Bet van Beeren's contribution to the LGBTQ+ community and her pioneering role in creating a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals in Amsterdam cannot be overstated. Café 't Mandje remains a symbol of LGBTQ+ history and resilience, and it was reopened in 2008 by van Beeren's niece, long after its closure following van Beeren's death in 1967. Today, it serves not only as a bar but also as a historical site, preserving the legacy of Bet van Beeren and the generations of LGBTQ+ individuals who found refuge within its walls.
Bet van Beeren's life and work have been recognized in various ways, including the naming of a bridge in Amsterdam after her, further cementing her status as an iconic figure in the city's history and in the broader struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance.
