Beta Beta Beta (ΒΒΒ), also known as TriBeta, is a honor society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. Since its founding in 1922 at Oklahoma City University by Dr. Frank G. Brooks, the society has grown to include more than 670 chapters across the United States and Puerto Rico.

History[edit | edit source]

The inception of Beta Beta Beta was rooted in the desire to acknowledge and promote academic excellence among biology students. It was established to provide a network for these students to share their scientific interests and discoveries. The society quickly expanded beyond Oklahoma City University, with chapters forming at colleges and universities across the country. The growth of TriBeta underscored the increasing interest in biological sciences during the early 20th century and the need for a formal organization to support undergraduate research and education in biology.

Purpose and Activities[edit | edit source]

The primary goals of Beta Beta Beta are to promote scholarship in the biological sciences, encourage undergraduate research, and foster a spirit of scientific inquiry among its members. Members are encouraged to pursue original investigations in biology and to share their research findings through publications and presentations at TriBeta regional and national conventions.

TriBeta also emphasizes the importance of academic excellence and recognizes outstanding achievement among its members through various awards and scholarships. The society publishes a quarterly journal, Bios, which features articles on current biological research, news of the society, and reviews of biological books.

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership in Beta Beta Beta is open to undergraduate students who have completed at least one term of college and have taken at least three semester hours (or equivalent) of biology coursework. Prospective members must also meet the society's academic standards, which typically include a minimum GPA requirement. There are three types of membership: Regular, Associate, and Honorary. Regular membership is reserved for those who have declared a biology major or minor and meet the academic criteria. Associate membership is available to those interested in biology but not pursuing a biology major or minor. Honorary membership is granted to individuals who have made significant contributions to the biological sciences.

Chapters[edit | edit source]

Beta Beta Beta has established chapters at accredited colleges and universities across the United States and Puerto Rico. Each chapter is identified by a unique Greek letter designation and operates under the national constitution of the society. Chapters are responsible for organizing local activities, including guest lectures, research projects, and community service programs related to biology.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Through its commitment to promoting research and education in biology, Beta Beta Beta has made a significant impact on the scientific community. The society has helped foster a generation of biologists who are passionate about their field and committed to advancing our understanding of the natural world. By providing a platform for undergraduate research and scholarship in biology, TriBeta contributes to the development of future scientists and educators in the biological sciences.
